RestaurantData.com has released a new first-half 2026 analysis of U.S. restaurant opening activity, reviewing 9,541 restaurant opening and development records tracked from January through June.
The report, titled U.S. Restaurant Opening Cross-Tab Analysis: January-June 2026 Semi-Annual Report, examines restaurant activity by geography, cuisine, location type, service format, operator type, alcohol status, source type, month, and city.
According to the analysis, the Southwest, Southeast, and West accounted for 76.9% of tracked restaurant opening and development activity during the first half of the year. Houston led all city markets with 265 records, followed by Los Angeles, New York, San Antonio, San Francisco, Dallas, Austin, San Diego, Miami, and Brooklyn.
Independent restaurants remained the largest operator segment, representing 5,820 records, or 61.0% of total tracked activity. Micro and emerging multi-unit operators accounted for 1,643 records, while multi-unit and chain operators represented 2,051 records.
The report also found that shopping centers and mixed-use developments continued to play a major role in restaurant development. These locations accounted for 6,205 records, or 65.0% of tracked activity. Free-standing buildings represented 2,051 records, or 21.5%.
Casual and family dining was the largest service segment, accounting for 4,605 records, or 48.3% of tracked activity. Fast casual represented 1,993 records, while quick service accounted for 1,507 records.
RestaurantData said the findings reflect the importance of tracking multiple early signals, including DBA and fictitious-name filings, incorporation records, alcohol license applications, building permits, planning activity, regional publications, local business news, restaurant announcements, and direct verification.
The company noted that raw filings are only a starting point. Many records are removed or reclassified during review because they may be duplicate filings, re-filings, inactive entities, address corrections, ownership records with no operating change, or records that do not reflect a true restaurant opening or development event.
For suppliers, distributors, technology companies, equipment vendors, recruiters, real estate firms, investors, and sales teams, the report points to continued opportunity in Sun Belt and Western markets, especially among independent restaurants, early-stage multi-unit operators, shopping center sites, and mixed-use developments.
