RestaurantData has identified 17 enterprise-scale restaurant companies showing concentrated expansion activity in a new analysis of 4,382 verified U.S. restaurant openings expected from June through September 2026.

The companies were drawn from RestaurantData’s Restaurant Enterprise Index and each recorded at least four verified openings during the four-month window. To compare systems of very different sizes, the analysis measured the activity both by raw opening count and by verified openings per 100 existing units.

CAVA led the relative-growth measure with 1.68 verified openings per 100 units, followed by Potbelly Sandwich Works at 1.49, 7 Brew Coffee at 1.26 and Shake Shack at 0.93. Chick-fil-A led the group by raw count with 19 verified openings, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill with 17 and 7 Brew Coffee with 11.

The counts are verified records in RestaurantData’s summer research file, not the companies’ complete opening totals. Unit counts used in the rate calculation are rounded figures published in the Restaurant Enterprise Index. Each weekly-cut link opens the most recent RestaurantPipeline research sample in which that company appeared.

Smaller concepts also produced repeat-opening signals

The same research file identified six emerging concepts outside the enterprise index with repeated verified openings: Layne’s Chicken Fingers, Foxtail Coffee Co, HTeaO, Juici Patties, Ono Hawaiian BBQ and Beignets & Brew. All six operate counter-service formats, and five recorded at least one opening in Texas.

The broader file contained 1,395 openings from multi-unit operators across 1,195 distinct concepts. Of those concepts, 90 appeared at least twice and accounted for 290 openings, or 20.8% of all multi-unit activity in the file. Fifty-nine of those repeat openers had activity in two or more states.

RestaurantData evaluates these smaller-company signals through its Expansion Pressure Index, a rolling prioritization model that measures concepts within comparable operating cohorts. Larger restaurant organizations, franchise groups, multi-concept operators and their associated brands are connected through the Restaurant Enterprise Index.

Human verification separates openings from administrative activity

Definitions, classifications and data-treatment rules used in the analysis follow the Restaurant Data Dictionary, RestaurantData’s documented framework for interpreting restaurant companies, locations, ownership relationships and development activity.

The summer analysis began with legal filings, permits, alcohol-license records, regional reporting and other public evidence. AI tools were used to locate candidate source material at scale, but RestaurantData researchers performed the verification, attempted direct contact and determined whether each record represented a credible new restaurant location.

That distinction matters because a new corporation or limited liability company can reflect an ownership transfer, a legal rename, a relocation or a project that never proceeds. RestaurantData excluded routine entity changes from the opening count and reported transfers separately.

Because many independent projects are identified during the filing or permitting stage, researchers often find them before the restaurant has opened – and before it has established a website or social-media presence. Only 24.5% of the independent openings had a website, Instagram, Facebook, Yelp or LinkedIn presence when first identified, compared with 93.5% of multi-unit openings. Researchers then attempted to contact the owner, operator or location management directly to verify that the project represented a new restaurant, that it was proceeding and when it was expected to open. Across the resulting verified file, more than two-thirds of locations were confirmed through direct contact.

Read the underlying research: The complete Summer 2026 Growing Restaurant Companies and Emerging Concepts report includes methodology, emerging-concept locations, repeat-opener analysis and digital-footprint findings. Recent address-level examples from RestaurantData’s New Opening Alerts appear in RestaurantPipeline’s weekly chain restaurant openings.

The full summer file is a documented floor rather than a census of every restaurant opening. Each included record is tied to a specific location and was retained only when the available evidence supported a net-new restaurant project.
